What can you
say about an 11 year old 3-legged cow who lies down and has a calf?
In August of 1994 I took care of an 18
month old bred heifer with a shattered radius and ulna (Maine-Anjou Voice
Nov/Dec 1997); we called her “Apricot.”
In August of 1995 we bought the cow. Living in East Lansing, we had to buy
a farm, and because cows are herd animals, more cows. Kaiser Cattle was
born. Apricot’s fracture healed, but she was left with a limp. She became
one of our foundation cows, and has provided us with some exceptional
females. |

Apricot was a big, black, pretty cow
with plenty of rib, capacity, and muscle who was fertile and had a lot of
milk. Although a bit stubborn, she had a great temperament, taking a
couple of aspirin every night by balling gun in the middle of the field.
